Silk carpet made from genuine natural silk
Persian silk rugs are among the finest, most valuable, and most intricate carpets in the world. Known for their brilliant sheen and unmatched delicacy, they have been admired for centuries as one of the highest achievements in craftsmanship. The city of Qom (Ghom) is the primary center for silk rug production today, though extremely rare pieces also come from Isfahan, Nain, and Kashan. With knot densities reaching up to 1,300,000 knots per square meter, Persian silk rugs are highly sought-after collector’s items.
Indian silk rugs tend to feature softer, more understated color palettes than their Persian counterparts. They are typically knotted on a silk warp with around 1,000,000 knots/m², or on cotton warp with approximately 500,000 knots/m². These rugs are finely detailed, often with floral or symmetrical patterns. While generally more affordable, they are still meticulously crafted and popular worldwide for their quality and beauty.
China produces some of the finest silk in the world, which is reflected in its exceptional silk rug production. Chinese silk rugs can feature up to 2.5 million knots per square meter, allowing for astonishing detail and artistic expression. These rugs are luxuriously thin, making them ideal not only for floors but also as wall hangings. Their soft shimmer and delicate weave transform them into true works of art. Contrary to common misconceptions, Chinese silk rugs belong to the highest quality class on the market.
The small town of Hereke, near Istanbul, is famous for producing some of the most prestigious silk rugs in the world. Hereke rugs are woven using a double knot technique, which results in a thicker pile (approx. 5 mm) than most silk rugs – an exceptional feature for rugs of such fineness. With over 1,000,000 knots/m² and production times of several years, these rugs are rare masterpieces. Due to rising material costs and the decline of skilled weavers, authentic Hereke silk rugs have become extremely scarce and expensive.
