Modern rugs combine the best of both worlds: traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. They rely on high-quality materials like pure wool and reinterpret them through clean lines, subtle tones, or bold patterns. From Gabbeh-inspired nomadic styles to minimalist Nepal designs and striking Indian designer rugs – modern oriental rugs bring character and ease into any space. Even solid-colored rugs fall into this category, offering a calming contrast to the often richly patterned classics.
Modern rugs are especially well-suited for open layouts, light-filled interiors, and minimalist home concepts. Whether as a soft accent or a bold statement piece, vintage or modern Indian rugs provide visual highlights without overwhelming the space.
Modern rugs are available in a range of qualities – from mass-produced pieces to truly handcrafted originals. We proudly offer only hand-knotted wool rugs, because they offer exceptional advantages in everyday use:
Durability: Hand-knotting ensures each rug is robust and long-lasting – designed to accompany you for many years.
Better living environment: Pure wool naturally regulates humidity, improves acoustics, and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Sustainability: Wool is a renewable, biodegradable natural fiber – free from synthetic materials and environmentally friendly.
A modern, hand-knotted rug is not just decoration – it's a conscious choice for quality, comfort, and timeless style.
Made from a genuine old Persian rug
Gabbeh, Loribaft, and Nepal rugs are among the most popular styles of modern oriental rugs. They feature a soft and friendly appearance, minimal patterns, and a naturally woolly pile. Free from the often heavily ornamented traditional designs, these rugs support a cozy and harmonious interior without drawing too much attention to themselves. We recommend these modern wool rugs as ideal family rugs thanks to their inviting texture, pure natural wool, and long-lasting durability.
Modern designer rugs from India are currently pushing creative boundaries with ever-new, striking designs. The fusion of hand-knotted craftsmanship and modern art is incredibly versatile, resulting in unique rugs full of expression. There are no limits to imagination here – as shown in the abstract motifs and bold color combinations that continue to amaze. At Wahdat Teppiche, we’re passionate about Indian designer rugs because they offer a completely fresh perspective on the world of rugs – all without losing their homely essence.
Gabbeh rugs originally come from present-day Iran, particularly from the southern regions where they were hand-knotted by nomadic tribes. The wool used in these rugs traditionally comes from highland sheep, and the dyeing process relies exclusively on natural plant-based dyes. Even today, hand-knotted Gabbeh rugs are appreciated for their broad spectrum of styles – ranging from minimalistic elegance to colorful ornamentation.
The knot density typically ranges between 80,000 and 240,000 knots per square meter. Gabbeh rugs are known for their thick wool pile, which gives them a soft feel but also limits the use of very fine patterns, as these would become distorted in the wool’s texture. This results in a very distinct look, clearly different from highly detailed or mass-produced rugs – and yet, Gabbeh rugs are unmistakably modern.
Interestingly, the word Gabbeh translates from Persian as “natural.”
The name Loribaft comes from the Luri or Lori people, a nomadic tribe in southwestern Iran. Modern Loribaft rugs are typically made from high-quality wool, feature solid colors or subtle designs, and are known for their durability and vibrant tones. These rugs create a calming and warm atmosphere in any room, without dominating the space or overpowering your interior. Inspired by traditional Iranian originals, Loribaft rugs are now also hand-knotted in high quality in India.
Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia, bordered by China (Tibet) to the north and by India to the east, west, and south. Although agriculture is the main economic activity, Nepal also has a rich tradition of rug weaving.
High-quality Nepal rugs are quiet works of art – handcrafted with precision and care. Natural, sustainable materials such as wool and cotton are used in the process. The Tibetan highland wool used in these rugs is considered one of the most durable and beautiful types in the world. The sheep graze at altitudes of over 4,000 meters and are exposed to the harsh Himalayan climate, which gives the wool its strength.
The pile of an authentic Nepal rug is extremely soft, yet impressively resilient and easy to care for. One of the most remarkable aspects is that the wool used is entirely natural – free from any synthetic additives or chemical treatments.
